Jet packs, a thing of the present?
The Martin Jet Pack has made its public debut at AirVenture, the world’s biggest air show.
In Wisconsin Wednesday, a New Zealand inventor unveiled a jet pack that allows man to fly using a twin engine backpack.
Glenn Martin spent 27 years developing the jet pack and showed it off at the experimental aircraft association convention in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
He said: ‘Within six months I’ll take it to 500ft, then the sky’s the limit.’ He believes its ideal flying height will be between 500ft and 1,000ft although it could go up to 6,000ft. He said his machine can stay up for 30 minutes, a flying time he believes will make it a best-seller. The pack is run by a 200 horsepower water-cooled, piston engine, similar to a car, driving downward-facing fans on either side of the pilot. Flaps at the bottom of the fans are used to direct air and steer.
The jetpack also contains safety features, including a parachute which can be used as low as 30m from the ground.
Martin plans on selling the packs for $100,000 each.
No more traffic jams as you slice through the air at speeds of up to 186mph.
